Kuneba: A Sacred Journey Through Ethiopia’s Early Islamic Heritage

Kuneba is one of Afar’s most remarkable historical and spiritual destinations, reflecting the early influence of Islam in Ethiopia. Located in the Dallol district, the Kuneba area is believed to be connected with the earliest followers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), with sites such as Efiso, Issi, and Lelegadi known for ancient tombs linked to the Companions.

The journey to Kuneba is also rich in history. Along the route, visitors can explore ancient trails, old settlements, and the historic city of Atbi Dera, where ancient tombs, church ruins, and archaeological remains reveal the deep religious and cultural layers of the region.

Today, Kuneba stands as a unique heritage site where faith, history, and culture meet, offering visitors a powerful glimpse into Afar’s role in Ethiopia’s early Islamic history.

These associations reflect the heritage traditions described in Visit Afar’s supplied material. Discuss historical attributions and current access with local custodians; the traditions are not presented here as independently established archaeological findings.

Asberi and Asaita

Regional source material describes the historic Asberi Mosque in the Samarobi area and the twentieth-century mosque at Asaita as significant examples of Afar religious architecture. Both are active or community-held places rather than ordinary attractions.

Opening, access and photography depend on local permission and prayer times.

Visiting respectfully

Dress modestly, avoid prayer times unless invited, keep voices low and ask before entering, recording or photographing. Women may be asked to cover their hair, and all visitors should follow the custodian’s route.
