Prepare for the place — not just the picture

Afar rewards travelers who arrive informed, equipped and ready to follow local guidance. Build in time, flexibility and respect.

Check before you travel

Conditions, road access, volcanic activity, permits and security guidance can change. Confirm the full route with Visit Afar and an experienced operator immediately before departure. Do not travel independently in remote or border areas.

Travel information

Essentials for an Afar journey

01

Getting here

Semera is the main air gateway for northern Afar. Awash is the road gateway for the south. Expedition routes require capable 4×4 transport and local planning.

02

When to go

The cooler period from roughly October to March is generally preferred, but destination conditions vary. Extreme heat remains possible at any time.

03

What to pack

Bring breathable coverage, sun protection, sturdy shoes, headlamp, dust protection, personal medicines and more water capacity than an ordinary trip.

04

Health

Discuss heat, hydration, personal fitness and medical needs before booking. Remote areas have limited facilities and long transfer times.

05

Money & connectivity

Carry enough Ethiopian birr for remote stages. Card acceptance and mobile coverage can be limited outside larger towns.

06

Permits & guides

Your operator should explain permits, park arrangements, local guides, checkpoints and contingency plans before you depart.

Before booking

Ask the questions that matter

Clear answers reveal how prepared a provider is—and where responsibility sits.

  • Is the full route currently open and approved?
  • Who are the local guides and responsible authorities?
  • What water, food, shelter and emergency supplies are included?
  • How are volcanic, heat, road and security conditions checked?
  • What happens if the itinerary must change?
  • How does the trip benefit communities and respect cultural protocols?

Frequently asked questions

Start with the essentials

Can I visit the Danakil Depression independently?

No independent journey is recommended. Remote terrain, extreme heat, changing routes and serious natural hazards make experienced local planning essential.

Are lava views at Erta Ale guaranteed?

No. Volcanic activity, gas, weather and visibility change. Responsible operators do not guarantee a particular natural phenomenon.

Can I swim in Afar’s lakes or hot springs?

Only where a responsible local authority or guide has confirmed conditions are safe. Temperature, depth, salinity and geothermal hazards vary.
