Introducing Afar to The World
The Bureau supports destination promotion through Visit Afar, visitor information, regional storytelling and partnerships. Its role is to help people discover the region while representing its landscapes and living cultures with care.
The promotion works of the bureau connects travellers with reliable planning information, local expertise and a realistic understanding of changing conditions.

Tourism Products and Local Benefit
Destination development brings routes, interpretation, visitor facilities, accommodation and community-led experiences together. The Bureau works with local institutions and providers to improve quality and encourage benefits that remain in Afar.
Potential products include geological journeys, heritage interpretation, wildlife routes, cultural encounters and visitor resources. Development must respect conservation limits and community decisions.
Service Quality and Provider Regulation
The Bureau is mandated to regulate tourism service delivery and quality. Tourism businesses should contact the Bureau to identify the registration, licensing, classification and service standards that apply to their activities. Requirements depend on business type and the responsible regional or federal authority.
Directory inclusion on Visit Afar is informational. It does not itself certify a current licence, guarantee service quality or replace verification before booking.
Permits, Exploration and Visitor Support
Travellers, explorers, researchers and filming teams should describe their route and purpose early. The Bureau can guide enquiries about tourism permissions and coordination with local offices, communities, protected-area managers and heritage authorities.
Different permissions may be needed for research, filming, protected sites, restricted routes and archaeological work. A general tourism enquiry is not permission to enter or conduct those activities. Confirm the issuing authority and written conditions before departure.
Heritage and Investment
The Bureau’s destination role includes supporting cultural and natural heritage protection, responsible tourism investment and partnerships that improve the visitor journey.
Investors and partners should begin with a clear concept, proposed location, community engagement approach and environmental considerations. Formal approvals remain with the competent authorities.
