About Afar
In northeastern Ethiopia, volcanic rifts, salt landscapes, the Awash River and resilient Afar communities come together in a destination unlike any other.
Afar Regional State
Afar is a region of immense geological and human significance. The Danakil Depression reveals an active rift system; the Lower Awash preserves evidence central to the story of human evolution; and the Awash River brings life to protected landscapes and communities.
Semera, the regional capital, is the main gateway for many journeys. From here, routes reach north toward Dallol and Erta Ale, south toward Awash and the Aledeghi Plains, and west toward the archaeological landscapes of Hadar.

People and culture
Pastoral life, trade, homes, food, music, oral history, craft and hospitality belong to a culture that is deeply rooted and fully contemporary.
